Can using ChatGPT in your job search help to boost your career?

It seems like only yesterday that job candidates relied on newspaper help-wanted ads and old-fashioned typewriters to search and apply for jobs. As technology has advanced, that job search process has evolved to include computers, the Internet, and online social media platforms like LinkedIn.

But what about even newer technologies like artificial intelligence? Is there a role for chatbots like ChatGPT in your job search efforts?

In this article, we will explore the brave new world of ChatGPT job search and how you can use this emerging technology to expedite your efforts to find and secure a great job.

What is ChatGPT?

The online ChatGPT tool is a generative AI – a type of artificial intelligence capable of generating new text and other content drawn from its training data. ChatGPT draws from a massive amount of learned data to generate natural conversational responses to users’ input prompts. This chatbot’s ability to access such a wide array of information has made it a valuable tool for users who want to quickly generate content for everything from emails to essays.

ChatGPT is a simple tool to use too. Simply go to http://chat.openai.com in your browser and look for the “message ChatGPT” input box. You can type any question in that box, hit enter, and receive a response from the AI almost instantaneously. For example, if you type the words, “What is generative AI” in that message box, ChatGPT will respond with a message like this:

“Generative AI refers to a subset of artificial intelligence techniques where systems are designed to generate new content or data that is similar to what they've been trained on. Instead of just recognizing patterns in data or making decisions based on input, generative AI models can produce new content, such as images, text, audio, or even video.”

How can you use ChatGPT in your job search?

Of course, that raises the obvious question: how can you use this AI for your job search? Obviously, you can’t ask ChatGPT or any other chatbot to find and secure employment for you. However, you can use it as a tool to enhance your job search once you become familiar with the technology’s capabilities and limitations.

So, how can you enjoy the benefits of ChatGPT in your job search?

Let’s examine four vital job search concerns that this chatbot can help you address:

  • Your resume and cover letter

  • Company research

  • Your LinkedIn profile

  • Interview preparation

ChatGPT job search: using a chatbot for your resume

Your resume is one of the most important elements of any job search, so it’s important to understand how you can use AI chatbots to enhance this tool. Of course, we’re not talking about turning ChatGPT loose to write your job search documents. As we observe in our article, Why You Shouldn’t Use AI to Write Your Resume, there are a whole host of reasons to not rely on artificial intelligence for the creation of your resume. That doesn’t mean that ChatGPT has no role to play in that process, though.

While a ChatGPT resume will lack creativity and personality, may not use the right language for your industry, and could include plagiarized material, AI technology can still be used to great effect as you craft your resume. The key is to use ChatGPT prompts to generate a useful template for your resume that you can then use to create your resume narrative.

For example, if you use the prompt, “Create my Marketing Director resume outline,” the AI will provide you with a structured template for that position:

1.      Contact Information:

  • Full Name

  • Phone Number

  • Email Address

  • LinkedIn Profile (optional)

2.      Summary or Objective Statement:

  • A brief overview of your experience, skills, and what you bring to the table as a marketing director.

3.      Professional Experience:

  • Start with your most recent position and work backward.

  • Include the company name, location, and your job title.

  • List your key responsibilities and achievements, focusing on quantifiable results whenever possible.

  • Highlight any leadership or management roles you held within the marketing department.

4.      Skills:

  • Highlight your core competencies relevant to the marketing director role.

  • Include both technical skills (e.g., digital marketing, analytics tools) and soft skills (e.g., leadership, communication).

5.      Education:

  • List your highest degree obtained, including the institution name, location, and graduation year.

  • Optionally include any relevant certifications or additional training.

6.      Achievements and Awards:

  • Showcase any notable accomplishments or recognition you've received in your marketing career.

7.      Professional Affiliations:

  • Include memberships in relevant marketing organizations or industry groups.

In addition, you can use ChatGPT to generate a sample job description that you can use to identify specific skills and other qualifications you’ll need to include in your resume. This can be especially helpful if a company’s job posting doesn’t provide the level of detail that you need to tailor your resume to that position.

If you ask ChatGPT to create a Marketing Director job description, you’ll get a result like this:

Job Title: Marketing Director

Location: [City, State]

Company Overview: [Insert brief description of the company, its industry, and its mission.]

Job Description:

How to Apply: [Include instructions for how candidates can apply, such as submitting a resume and cover letter through the company website or via email.]

You can use that job description to identify key skills you’ll need for your resume, and tailor your achievements to align with the role. That can help to ensure your resume speaks to the employer’s needs by highlighting accomplishments and skills that showcase you as the best candidate for the job.

Using ChatGPT for your cover letter

Many job seekers would prefer not to write cover letters for every job they seek. The good news is that ChatGPT can simplify that process too! If you use a chat prompt like, “Write my Marketing Director cover letter,” the AI will quickly provide you a basic cover letter template that you can modify with your own personal information:

Improve your ChatGPT job search by using chatbots to research employers

Once you have your job search tools in hand, it’s time to locate opportunities and research those employers to learn more about them. Your best option for identifying job opportunities won’t be ChatGPT, since the AI lacks the capability to search the internet for those open positions (and will inform you of that fact if you make that request).

Instead, use job search sites to locate open jobs. Then, ChatGPT can help you learn more about those companies when it’s time to prepare for your application or interview.

For example, if you wanted to apply for a job with Amazon, you might ask ChatGPT to tell you about the company’s work culture. Below is a partial transcript of the AI’s response to that prompt:

“Amazon's work culture has been a subject of both praise and criticism over the years. Here are some key aspects of Amazon's work culture:

1.      Customer-Obsession: Amazon prioritizes customer satisfaction above all else. This customer-centric approach influences decision-making at all levels of the company and drives a relentless focus on delivering high-quality products and services.

2.      Innovation: Amazon fosters a culture of innovation and encourages employees to think big and take risks. The company values experimentation and is known for its willingness to try new ideas, even if they sometimes fail.

3.      High Performance Expectations: Amazon has a reputation for setting high performance standards and expecting employees to meet ambitious goals. The company values results and rewards individuals and teams who consistently deliver strong performance.”

Obviously, you can use results like that to decide whether your values align with a potential employer’s culture. You can also use that information to prepare for an interview – ensuring that your prepared responses highlight all the ways your work style, vision, and values make you a great fit for the company.

Enhance your LinkedIn profile with ChatGPT

ChatGPT can also help you optimize your LinkedIn profile to strengthen your online brand. With the right prompts, you can use the chatbot to generate a compelling profile headline, flesh out the About section of your profile, and generate messages to hiring managers and other relevant contacts.

  • If you want to create a great headline, use this prompt: “Create a LinkedIn headline for the [industry name] industry, using no more than 220 characters and containing the following keywords: [include two or three important keywords].

  • For a great About section, create a prompt that provides ChatGPT with your job title, key skills, strengths, and achievements – as well as a recommended word count.

  • Finally, if you’re one of those people who dread making new contacts on LinkedIn, ChatGPT can help there too. Just prompt the AI to help you create a short message to a specific hiring manager that details your expertise, skills, and desire to learn more about job opportunities with their firm.

Use ChatGPT to prepare for interviews

Once you’re comfortable interacting with the AI, you can even add interview preparation to your ChatGPT job search process. While the AI cannot interact with you in the same way an interviewer will, it can generate great job-specific questions that are likely to be asked by prospective employers.

Some example prompts you might use include:

  • Ask me job interview questions related to a potential role as a Marketing Director.

  • I’m seeking a job as a [job title], which requires the following skills: [list of core competencies]. Can you ask me the type of questions I’m likely to encounter during my interview?

  • The job I’m seeking requires knowledge about [list core competencies, industry knowledge, role duties], and I’d like you to ask me questions that evaluate my knowledge.
